In the Opti 4 Class, young sailors develop their skills necessary to become athletes on the Red, White, and Blue (RWB) OCYC Racing Team (Skippers who are 10 or under sail in the white fleet; skippers who are 11 and 12 sail in the blue fleet; and skippers who are 13, 14, or 15 sail in the red fleet. In all fleets, the determining date is the skipper's age on the first day of the regatta. Skippers move up to blue fleet on their 11th birthday and red fleet on their 13th birthday.) With both local and travel events at this level, sailors see progression towards levels attained only by the best athletes in the sport. Along the way, the Opti 4 Class is designed to promote sportsmanship and fair sailing, ensuring that sailors are enjoying their time on the water and challenging each sailor to progress as far as their drive and ability can take them. (see the Parent-Student Handbook, Regattas on page 5: Sailors and parents need to take full responsibility for participation at any regatta. Parents are responsible for taking their child's boat to and from the regatta, and loading and unloading their child's boat for each regatta. At least one parent must be at regattas to assist and supervise their child, in particular in the event he/she leaves the water early due to heavy wind, boat breakdown, etc.)
Private ownership of a race ready Optimist Dinghy is strongly recommended for the Opti 4 Class..
The Opti 4 Class meets afternoons from 1:00 to 4:30 five days per week.
