The Opti 2 Class is for children ages 8 to 12. The class builds on the Opti 1 class and is designed to help students develop skills while also building knowledge and confidence. The Opti 2 class sailors focus on refining boat control, and boat handling skills. Students learn advanced sailing skills as well as an introduction to racing starts and courses.
Sailors are introduced to the application of the Optimist Dinghy in a racing environment with the focus skill building and confidence rather than places, as sailors practice all the points of sail by tacking, jibing, ‘kiting' downwind and rounding marks. Students learn responsibility through care of their and OCYC's equipment, and the dynamic of learning from their teammates!
Optimist dinghies are used for instruction. OCYC recommends that Opti 2 sailors use a club provided Optimist Dinghy but can use their own boat if they have one. Note however that OCYC providing a boat does not constitute a charter and students are not guaranteed a specific boat from class to class, nor are they permitted to use an OCYC boat outside of their lessons, except for OCYC JS arranged private lessons.
If your child does not have his or her own boat, choose the class registration 'with club boat'. Only ifyour child has its own Opti can you choose the option 'with own boat'.
As in the Opti 1 Class, fun sailing games and other skill-related activities will be incorporated into the teaching. Classes meet mornings from 9:00 to 12:00, a minimum of two days per week, up to five days per week.
