Opti 1

What is the Opti 1 Class?

This is the beginner level class for children ages 7 to 10. The goal of the Opti 1 class is for each child to have positive early experiences on the water and while sailing. Building confidence, ensuring safety, demonstrating respect, courtesy to others, and good teamwork are primary goals. Novice sailors learn basic nomenclature, seamanship, and sailing skills, including sailing on all points of sail, taking and gybing, and will be introduced to sailing around a course.

Optimist Dinghies are used for instruction. The Optimist is the international standard in junior instruction and is sailed by over 300,000 children all over the world. The boat’s simplicity and stability make it ideal for teaching young beginners. Called “a bathtub that breeds the best sailors" the Optimist is designed for kids; kids can handle them without danger or fear. Single handed learning is best – kids don't learn to ride a bike on a tandem. Opti 1 sailors will be given an OCYC owned boat to use during classes.

Fun sailing games and other skill-related activities are incorporated into the course. Upon completion students should feel comfortable sailing alone in an Optimist dinghy. Classes meet mornings from 9:00 to 12:00, a minimum of two days per week, up to five days per week.
