Club 420 1

What is the Club 420 1 Class?

This course is for older and larger sailors who are new to sailing, or younger sailors with some experience but who are new to the Club 420 and are sailing a double-handed boat for the first time. Age recommendation is 13 to 18.

The Club 420 (C420) is a double-handed sloop- - i.e. has a crew of two. They have a mainsail, jib and spinnaker, and the crew uses a trapeze. The C420s are fast and exciting to sail. Private boat ownership is strongly encouraged. Old Cove YC has a dozen C420s which are made available to Junior Sailors on a first-registration basis. Using an OCYC boat is not a charter and students are not guaranteed a specific boat from class to class, nor are they permitted to use an OCYC boat outside of their lessons, except for OCYC JS arranged private lessons. If your child does not have his or her own boat, choose the class registration “with club boat”. Only if your child has its own C420 can you choose the option “with own boat”.

The C420 1 course includes basics of rigging a 420, basic boat handling, seamanship (knots, weather, etc.), sportsmanship, and water safety. On-the-water instruction focuses on boat handling skills: tacking and gybing, steering and sail trim, launching and docking boats, and capsize recovery.

The C420 1 class meets up to five times a week in the mornings from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, with the minimum class being two days per week.
