OCYC Instructor requirements:

Head Instructor

12-week commitment
Should have completed min. 1 yr college
USSA Membership Current
USSA Small Boat Instructor Level 2 Certification
NYS Boating Safety Certificate
USSA Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling Course
USSA Safety and Rescue Boat Handling course
Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports Certified
FA/CPR card
Have own handheld VHF radio for daily use
Salaried full time position

Senior instructors

Min. 9-week commitment
Should have completed 11th grade
USSA Membership Current
USSA Small Boat Instructor Level 1 Certification
NYS Boating Safety Certificate
USSA Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling Course
USSA Safety and Rescue Boat Handling Course
Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports Certified
FA/CPR card
NYS employment certificate
Have own handheld VHF radio for daily use
Salaried full time position

Instructors

Should have completed 10th grade
USSA Membership Current
PGJSA Instructor Training class
USSA Sailing Counselor course
NYS Boating Safety Certificate
USSA Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling Course
Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports Certified
FA/CPR card
NYS employment certificate
Must be enrolled in an 8 week OCYC Racing class (Not required if instructor will turn 19 or older during 2018)
Part time position; hourly compensation

Junior Instructors

Should have completed 9th grade
Should have completed one year as an Instructor in Training
USSA Membership Current
PGJSA Instructor Training class
NYS Boating Safety Certificate
USSA Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling
Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports Certified
FA/CPR card
NYS employment certificate
Must be enrolled in an OCYC Junior Sailing class
Part time position, hourly compensation

Instructors in Training

Should have completed 8th grade
USSA Membership Current
PGJSA Instructor Training class
FA/CPR card
Cannot operate powerboats without both: USSA Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling Course and NYS Boating Safety Certificate
Must be enrolled in and attend an 8 week OCYC Racing class
Volunteer part time position

Other considerations

USSA Sailing Counselor course prior to it being required adds $.50 to base rate
USSA Small Boat Instructor Level 1 prior to it being required adds $.50 to base rate
USSA Small Boat Instructor Level 2 prior to it being required adds $.50 to base rate
USSA Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling Course and Race Support Course prior to it being required adds $.50 to base rate
Red Cross Lifeguard certification adds $.50 to base rate
Consecutive years in same category adds $.50 to base rate
Resume, sailing experience (a comprehensive resume including sailing and racing experience is highly recommended), work history, and other merit factors may also be considered

Other Requirements and Conditions

Instructor in Training experience is an important factor when considering Junior Instructor candidates
Participation and assistance at OCYC events is expected of all instructors
All instructors are expected to work a few days before program begins
College age instructors are expected to work a full week before program begins
High School age instructors are expected to work a full week after program ends
Additional pre and post-season hours for commissioning and decommissioning may be available at an adjusted rate
Full Time Salaried employees can have up to 3 unpaid personal days, prior approval of the commodore and head instructor is required
Adjustment to work schedule for Part time employees requires prior approval of the commodore and head instructor
The applicant must fill out applications personally
The applicant must handle all communications regarding the application and or employment personally

Certificates for all training requirements must be submitted annually with Application
