Opti 1

What is the Opti 1 Program?

This is the beginner level class for children ages 7 to 10. The goal of the Opti 1 class is for each child to have positive early experiences on the water and while sailing. Building confidence, ensuring safety, demonstrating respect, courtesy to others, and good teamwork are primary goals. Novice sailors learn basic nomenclature, seamanship, and sailing skills, including sailing on all points of sail, taking and gybing, and will be introduced to sailing around a course.

Optimist Dinghies are used for instruction. The Optimist is the international standard in junior instruction and is sailed by over 300,000 children all over the world. . The boat’s simplicity and stability make it ideal for teaching young beginners. Called “a bathtub that breeds the best sailors" the Optimist is designed for kids; kids can handle them without danger or fear. Single handed learning is best – kids don't learn to ride a bike on a tandem. Old Cove YC has some two dozen Optimist Dinghies which are made available to Junior Sailors on a first-registration basis. This is not a charter and students are not guaranteed a specific boat from class to class, nor are they permitted to use an OCYC boat outside of their lessons, except for OCYC JS arranged private lessons. If your child does not have his or her own boat, and we strongly recommend that they do, choose the class registration “with club boat”. Only if your child has its own Opti can you choose the option “with own boat”.

Fun sailing games and other skill-related activities are incorporated into the course. Upon completion students should feel comfortable sailing alone in an Optimist dinghy. Classes meet mornings from 9:00 to 12:00, a minimum of two days per week, up to five days per week.

Opti 2

What is the Opti 2 Program?

The Opti 2 Class is for children ages 8 to 12. The class builds on the Opti 1 class and is designed to help students develop skills while also building knowledge and confidence. The Opti 2 class sailors focus on refining boat control, and boat handling skills. Students learn advanced sailing skills as well as an introduction to racing starts and courses.

Sailors are introduced to the application of the Optimist Dinghy in a racing environment with the focus skill building and confidence rather than places, as sailors practice all the points of sail by tacking, jibing, ‘kiting’ downwind and rounding marks. Students learn responsibility through care of their and OCYC’s equipment, and the dynamic of learning from their teammates!

Optimist dinghies are used for instruction. It is highly recommended that students have their Opti. If your child does not have his or her own boat, choose the class registration “with club boat”. Only if your child has its own Opti can you choose the option “with own boat”.

As in the Opti 1 Class, fun sailing games and other skill-related activities will be incorporated into the teaching. Classes meet mornings from 9:00 to 12:00, a minimum of two days per week, up to five days per week.

Opti 3

What is the Opti 3 Program?

The Opti 3 class is for students ages 9 to 15 years old. The Opti Racing class builds on the skills learned in the Opti 2 class to improve boat handling skills and apply these to a racing environment. Sailors work on boat control, developing boat speed, maneuvering, and sailing around a course. Sailors learn how to start, how to round race marks and how to finish a race. On-shore chalk talks are used to prepare for on-the-water drills, as well as learning the racing rules, and developing racing strategies. Sailors are encouraged to participate in area regattas. Here the sailors work on sail trim, boat speed, tactics, rules, and strategy under actual racing conditions. Parental support at regattas is mandatory (see the Parent-Student Handbook, Regattas on page 5: Sailors and parents need to take full responsibility for participation at any regatta. Parents are responsible for taking their child’s boat to and from the regatta, and loading and unloading their child’s boat for each regatta. At least one parent must be at regattas to assist and supervise their child, in particular in the event he/she leaves the water early due to heavy wind, boat breakdown, etc.)

General notes about racing an Optimist Dinghy: The Optimist class rules specify that a skipper can race Optimists until December 31st in the year they turn 15. On December 31st of that year, they age out of Optimists and can no longer race the boat. Additionally, Optimist racing fleets are typically divided into fleets. Green fleet is a special fleet for beginner racers. Green fleet sailors can be any age up to 15. A green fleet might have skippers who are as young as 6 and as old as 15, but sooner or later they’ll move into either the red, white, or blue fleet depending on their age. Green fleet typically sails relatively close to shore and on short courses. Skippers who are 10 or under sail in the white fleet; skippers who are 11 and 12 sail in the blue fleet; and skippers who are 13, 14, or 15 sail in the red fleet. In all fleets, the determining date is the skipper’s age on the first day of the regatta. Skippers move up to blue fleet on their 11th birthday and red fleet on their 13th birthday.

Private boat ownership is strongly encouraged. Old Cove YC has some two dozen Optimist Dinghies which are made available to Junior Sailors on a first-registration basis. It should be noted that these are older “starter” boats that are not really suitable for a racing environment. Using an OCYC boat is not a charter and students are not guaranteed a specific boat from class to class, nor are they permitted to use an OCYC boat outside of their lessons, except for OCYC JS arranged private lessons. If your child does not have his or her own boat, choose the class registration “with club boat”. Only if your child has its own Opti can you choose the option “with own boat”.

The Opti 3 Class meets afternoons from 1:00 to 4:30, a minimum of two days per week, up to five days per week.

Opti 4

What is the Opti 4 Program?

In the Opti 4 Class, young sailors develop their skills necessary to become athletes on the Red, White, and Blue (RWB) OCYC Racing Team (Skippers who are 10 or under sail in the white fleet; skippers who are 11 and 12 sail in the blue fleet; and skippers who are 13, 14, or 15 sail in the red fleet. In all fleets, the determining date is the skipper’s age on the first day of the regatta. Skippers move up to blue fleet on their 11th birthday and red fleet on their 13th birthday.) With both local and travel events at this level, sailors see progression towards levels attained only by the best athletes in the sport. Along the way, the Opti 4 Class is designed to promote sportsmanship and fair sailing, ensuring that sailors are enjoying their time on the water and challenging each sailor to progress as far as their drive and ability can take them. (see the Parent-Student Handbook, Regattas on page 5: Sailors and parents need to take full responsibility for participation at any regatta. Parents are responsible for taking their child’s boat to and from the regatta, and loading and unloading their child’s boat for each regatta. At least one parent must be at regattas to assist and supervise their child, in particular in the event he/she leaves the water early due to heavy wind, boat breakdown, etc.)

Private ownership of a race ready Optimist Dinghy is mandatory for the Opti 4 Class..
